Arla's Aimless Anecdotes

This is my attempt to write one occasional email to various people at one time. I specifically write with my cousin Judy in mind. Since we grew up together we agreed in our teens that we'd always try to keep in contact. This is a supplement to our twice yearly phone calls and our once yearly visit at our Johanson Family Memorial Day Reunion.

Faust and Visas

You know about the visas, of course, and how we won’t mention who got the best purchase price. The only thing that matters is whether or not we are turned away when we try to enter customs in Ghana. I feel certain that there is someway to entice the officials so that everything suddenly becomes OK to enter. Maybe it would be fun to see what happens if we can’t enter the country. I’m not up for that much fun.

I know you love opera so I have to tell you Sunday was the first time I actually saw an opera with costumes and a set. It was great and I’m ready for more. It took awhile for me to recognize the Devil, and was a little gory before it was over but the final scene was nice.

Darren and Leslie did help me out with the updated Core Duo processor. It took Brett to tell me how to actually fix it so I can write again but I am now happy with the computer. I also have it loaded with games minus no terrible Sponge Bob so we are set for the grandsons to be entertained for the indoor winter seasons.

All the boys are doing fine in school and are learning to obey the teacher no matter what. They are all especially excited about Halloween though it is still a long way off in my mind. Miles wore his costume around for an entire afternoon already but he can only do that at my house as Halloween is banned until October 1st at his house. I’m so happy I will miss this holiday this year.

Diana says she has Brooks booked for next year. I see Leslie especially invited Willie though he probably will be in Afghanistan next May. I can’t imagine how long this must continue. She also reported that all was well with Betty, Brice, Mina and Bob. Ken and Mary Jane just left for Italy.

I got up in the middle of the night to check my layover time in Amsterdam. It is a pretty tight squeeze of 105 minutes. If I miss you there I will need to phone Esther for a later ride. See why I want to go on an escorted trip where everything is handled for me. Ugh!, it sounds better to stay home. I’m positively not taking an iphone.

Since you asked about Ocean I realize that you are not reading these posts. I explained about him in August and yet you are now asking who he is. I can’t imagine that you don’t remember these details.

All The Grandsons Go to School

Here are Miles and Lucas heading out with mom, dad and grandma. All was well until we met all the other students ready for school. The bulletin boards were so cheery and welcoming and the teachers were so sweet and kind. You couldn't help but be happy to be in school and happy to have children so inspired and filled with kindness. The boys turned very still and quiet while they sat at their desks. It is very rare to see Miles still and quiet. In fact today he reported that he had to put his head down once as he was talking while the teacher tried to talk.

There were nice bulletin boards with one filled with want ads asking for third graders who want to excel in school to learn. I couldn't read aloud the one asking "Could you say something nice to someone today?". Examples were Cool, Awesome, Whoa, Good job. I think it's because I'd forgotten to use those for so long myself that my voice kept breaking up when I read. Hey, I realize everything will be different after the first week of school.

Peyton and Walker were not up for having their photo taken because they were waiting for 8 year old Joe to accompany them to the bus. They are so lucky to have a good pupil role model. They are in Pre-first which I guess is the new name for Kindergarten though there is a difference.

We had a great weekend at Uncle Ron's and you'll want to know he probably will not be going anywhere for his 80th birthday. Twelve of us floated the river in tubes along with only 100 others. It was bright, sunny and fun!

How do I use this computer?

I made a huge mistake by downloading Lion. I thought it needed to be added so I did and now I keep getting this message saying "You can no longer use this program as PowerPC programs are no longer supported". I can no longer play my Solitaire program, use my word processing program and I'm not sure what else specifically unless I buy a new model MAC I suppose. Maybe some smart person will write and tell me how to proceed. I really want to make this post be titled:
Ocean

This is Brett and Anna Marie's new dog and since you so much like dogs you can tell he's a kind of poodle, lab, retriever. They are working hard to get the puppy to do the right thing. So far he is coming along and yes, Ocean is his name.

The rest of the time we have been swimming and having fun in the sun. Here is Miles.

There are usually many more people in the pool but then I don't think to get the
camera.

I want to tell you everything that's on FB but since you say you hate it, I won't bother. Claire and I are going to see Ronnie and twenty-two other relatives. Cyd and Dave will also be there and Sunday we are heading for Tyler's wedding.

School is beginning on Tuesday so that will bring a close to summer. Miles, Peyton and Walker all start Kindergarten. You know teachers earn their pay.
