Arla's Aimless Anecdotes

This is my attempt to write one occasional email to various people at one time. I specifically write with my cousin Judy in mind. Since we grew up together we agreed in our teens that we'd always try to keep in contact. This is a supplement to our twice yearly phone calls and our once yearly visit at our Johanson Family Memorial Day Reunion.

Starline Batons

So even though Leslie was so nice to find the location of batons for MD you refuse to participate. I'll post your comment to her request here. "You have got to be kidding...I will not order batons so Arla can prove that she can still twirl. She can use a broom.
Aunt Judy

Well, that comment sent me to more toy stores and at the White Elephant I hit a bonanza of 5 batons. With the two I already have we now have 7 so that should be plenty for anyone who wants to twirl. I know you can still do all the twirling too so you will want to be on camera.

I am baking cookies today to carry on Grandma's tradition. They don't look as good as Grandma's but then I didn't take the care she did to do things right.

Nancy has already left Medford and is on her way with the family banner (3 new names added). It's amazing how motivated people are to arrive early when there is the opportunity of a good bed.

I hope you have a great trip to Seattle and we'll see you Friday afternoon sometime. I can't believe you would want me to twirl a broom.

We're almost ready

I can’t find any batons so I guess baton twirling is a lost art sort of like scrimshaw. We can’t hand down our talent to future generations. I did think about bringing the bounce castle and my bike but then I’d need a big gas-guzzling automobile to haul it all. Therefore I am bringing 5 pizzas, 25 baked potatoes and paper towels. I guess I just need one outfit to wear and maybe a bathing suit.

Lucas has a new sleeping bag but he doesn’t know exactly how to use it yet. If we didn’t have MD he would never know these things. He crawled inside with his chocolate cookie yesterday and rolled around in it with his head covered. After this year when we say MD he’ll want to go immediately sort of like the mention of Disneyland.

Brett and family plan on leaving around 4 and they are very thankful to know their room is waiting. I think my mom and I will leave after lunch and then we need to stop at Costco for the pizzas. Cyd and Dave will spend Saturday with us. Somebody said when you have children Memorial Day is more memorable so next year they’ll probably want to stay for three days.

Speaking of next year, I vote for Moclips. I think we need to go to the beach. You are just the one to find us a good place there. Check on line and see what you can come up with before you arrive.

How many somersaults can you do?

ESTA

Is this the same as an ETA? I'm not from the city so I don't know these things. Anyway I'm glad you're arriving early and will take Regina to the airport on your return. Maybe you are flying together even.

Ron thinks he's pretty funny with the Tina remark. I just hope whatever happens Jeff has his own car so he has transportation home and doesn't need to hitch a ride like last year.

I made such a big fuss about my mom being at Memorial Day but now things have changed. She was asked to stay away from the Pinochle Group as she was badgering her partner with her rules of the game. Now she has been banned from the Sunday bus tours for roughing up another passenger. It seems the bus empties when my mom gets on so I will be attending the scenic tour with her for tomorrow's ride. I'm getting myself one step closer to being a resident there.

The weather here is wonderful so plan for a warm MD weekend. I hope you are practicing your cartwheels.

Alberta at Memorial Day

Well, the new menu appeared for MD and it sent me in a tizzy. The appearance of Alberta being absent for her Johanson family reunion just didn't seem possible. Of course, I inflate all my mom's abilities most of the time unless I've spent an hour or so with her. I also will not use my best judgement when my emotions rule my decision.
Anyway you set the record straight when you said,"Ok I will continue the conversation I had with her every morning at Steele. Where we are and how long before we leave?"

Get out your Baton!

We’ll just see who can remember the twirls this Memorial Day. There’s the front spin, the side spin and, just in case you need a reminder, the two handed spin. I’ve been practicing some but I haven’t yet started on the throws. I guess as long as we’re at this we should add the tumbling events just to see what we can do at 64 and 65. How about the cartwheel or perhaps just a few somersaults in quick succession?

Now we can find out what you’ll come up with for your contribution to the events. So far there has been no discussion about the reunion. I know you and I will be there for perhaps the entire time. Will the wine be there?

Charlie decided the children could wear life jackets all day but his mom says even those wouldn’t help much with the swiftness of the Chiwawa River right now. It is good to know that so far we all have beds but I’m sure the early arrivals get the best accommodations. It’s sort of a trade off as then you have to stay just that much longer.

I have nothing to mention today. I can always use my grandsons for a fallback and then you can stop reading right here. Lucas is completely grown now. How did it happen so quickly? I don’t know how or where he learned things but he does know that Darth Maul is the worst monster in the world. I showed him the photo of his mom and dad at their wedding and said he’d be marrying someone when he grew up. He said no that he will be a Power Ranger when he grows up. He works on his Power Ranger skills constantly like for example when we’re sitting watching television he’ll hop on the coffee table and then leap to the couch, just barely missing the floor. I can’t understand why anyone would want to do that but it must be in the male gene. No darling girl would think of such a stunt.

Cyd started work yesterday and the entire family was happy on their way to daycare. That evening when I called to see how the day went Cyd was in tears. She just thinks she is abandoning her boys and for what reason? Time will tell how this plays out but she is now being held hostage by the daycare as they need 30 days notice for dropping out. I say wait and see how things go.

I have a little bit of family happenings. Jill and family are in Disneyland this week, Diana is going to walk the Camino de Santiago with Linda and me in September, and I haven’t heard a word from Nancy.
