Arla's Aimless Anecdotes

This is my attempt to write one occasional email to various people at one time. I specifically write with my cousin Judy in mind. Since we grew up together we agreed in our teens that we'd always try to keep in contact. This is a supplement to our twice yearly phone calls and our once yearly visit at our Johanson Family Memorial Day Reunion.

Where are the Peerless Dentists?

Almost two years ago my mom put her hearing aides in her pocket and then her slacks were put in the washing machine. Now her top dentures are missing. It’s been a week and still after searching everywhere in her residence they have not reappeared. They didn’t go down the toilet as it still works well but perhaps they went out in the garbage. Anyway I am waiting a few more days to make a decision about what to do. If she gets new teeth will they be secure or turn up missing again in a few weeks?

My mom is very content these days and enjoys walking around the back yard with her friend, Wanda, each morning. She always recognizes me which is very nice but she doesn’t seem to know anyone else. She likes to read books and watch television and, of course, her favorite part of the day is mealtime.

We are having perfect fall weather here with lots of sunshine. Miles spent the night on Saturday and he is very good but has no interest in getting rid of his diapers. I suggested he was a baby very much like Clay Aiken’s Parker on the front of this week’s People. Miles liked the idea, cut out the cover and now has it over his bed to remind himself as he told his mom, “that I am not a baby and need to use the potty.” His mom was not exactly pleased with Clay’s photo on the wall but she did let it stay for now.

My Obama pin is still staring at me on my desk but I purchased a McCain-Palin sign for the front of the house. I know he’s old but I’m afraid the Democrats will continue to make a mess of Congress. Now Hank will have to get home and send his views.

The note from Jasmin was so nice except for the sad message about the rhino dying. I think there is the tame young rhino that liked James and he maybe can fill in as the new mascot.

Hopefully the meerkats are entertaining you and you are having a wonderful time. I’ll be anxious to hear about the trip.

Cape Town

Since you are there visiting I’m writing in case you are using the hotel email services. It is exciting just to be writing to this city so I know you must be enjoying the sights there. I can’t imagine how it will be when you get to your work site which is a flight from where you now are to Uppington and then three hours by road to the Earthwatch site. It will be lots of togetherness for you 5 women and Hank in addition to the staff there. I’m glad you are fond of meerkats, still the best part is being in South Africa.

Lucas is busy with soccer now and I’ve taken a long video to insert here but I’ve decided I need a very short video to add. Last week Lucas lost a shoe, cried when the other team made a goal and then finally got it together and made two goals himself, after first running onto the field to help out his team while he was being sidelined.

The group we went with to Mississippi last year is on its way towards another work week in the Gulf but they will have a quiet time without the two of us badgering one another about work procedures. While they were such a nice group the public praying was difficult to get used to for some of us who like to internalize our self talk.

Miles drew a picture for me the other day. When I asked him what he drew for me he said “It’s a wine bottle for you, grandma.” I can’t figure out how a two year old would come up with that idea but now I will start drinking all my beverages from only a coffee cup. When he is thinking of what to draw for me I’m hoping he’ll think of walking, swimming, laughing, computing or shopping.

I hope you can send a message from your hotel so I’ll be checking my tracker. Did you take some Obama pins with you? Everyone will be wanting one as well as a ballpoint pen.

End of Summer

It’s really not that summer is over yet though school has started and Lucas has survived almost two weeks so far. It is so warm yet and there is much yard work here. We also took time to attend the state fair where the boys were thrilled with oversized inflated sledgehammers that only cost a few dollars at the arcade. The boys thought they were the best gifts ever.

The time is changing however as the Spirit of Halloween store has opened finally so Lucas and I could search through it for two hours last weekend. He was intrigued with the antimated torso that screamed while it was being hung by a rope but luckily he didn’t want to buy it for $249 because he still favors his plastic chain from last year. I suppose we will visit this store many more times before Halloween though I consider it my least favorite holiday.

Diana and Jim rented a cabin on Coeur d’Alene last week and invited me to ride around the lake with them in Charlie’s boat. We had such a good time talking, looking at fancy homes and even sharing a lunch and beverage. I didn’t know using Charlie’s boat would be so much fun but it made it even nicer since he was working while we were playing. Diana and Jim could be grandparents again in a few weeks when baby Nolan arrives. (I’m voting for that name)

Here is Camp Sweyolaken where we spent one week vacations and learned our camp songs, like "Now every Camp Fire girl is so discrete". Surely you will recognize the beach front.

How does it feel to be 66? Try to remember as you only get to be that young for one more day and I will talk to you then.

The New School Year

Here is Lucas ready for his first day of kindergarten. He is excited and he should be as grandma is less than excited because he is not starting at a public school. I hope the parochial school will teach him all the proper things so one day he will be able to attend his neighborhood school, and you know I will keep all my opinions to myself and let the parents raise their child as they should.

Peyton and Walker left for home this morning and I’m resting after three days with 4 boys at McDonald’s playland, pools, school playgrounds, and Chuck E. Cheese. There was no meal preparation at my house so that helped make the weekend bearable, besides the boys are getting older and can entertain themselves for longer periods of time. We’ve also learned to get them as tired as possible.

I’m wondering if Ms. Clara and Wendell will need our remodeling services again now after the latest hurricane. I’m sure you are getting ready for your trip. I will be phoning you one day soon. Barb sent a few details from their trip to Italy. It reminded me of how much we saw on our trip there 20 years ago. Did we watch the Palio de Siena or just see the parade of the riders?
