Arla's Aimless Anecdotes

This is my attempt to write one occasional email to various people at one time. I specifically write with my cousin Judy in mind. Since we grew up together we agreed in our teens that we'd always try to keep in contact. This is a supplement to our twice yearly phone calls and our once yearly visit at our Johanson Family Memorial Day Reunion.

Facebook

OK, from your response yesterday, “I’m happy for all of you”, I get the idea that you are interested in communicating with neither Hanna nor Vincent. I hope I will quit bugging you about it now but some of the information on Facebook is just fun. I like being able to catch up with people’s lives without much effort. And while I’m at it I might as well agree to not mention that this year is the 50th anniversary of our high school graduation. You realize that no one wants to commemorate this event without the valedictorian being there.

You do like to hear about Memorial Day I know so I can mention Jeff phoned this week to get the details of Lewis and Clark Environmental Learning Center if you can call it that. He hopes to bring his motor home and perhaps a girlfriend along with his daughter. Of course, the girlfriend is an unknown at this time but he’s working on getting one for that holiday he says. I’m sure we’ll be ready for this new one but it’s getting more difficult to keep them all straight over the years.

Lucas is keeping me entertained each morning. Today we are preparing for the school carnival by making a cake for the cake walk and crazy hair for one student. I can’t imagine that any learning will go on at school today with mullets and blue hair. And besides it is Dr. Suess’s birthday.

Miles finished up his soccer class this week which was timely as he was running amok in the gymnasium picking up the goal net and rearranging it, kicking cones, and giving orders to his teammates. He did listen to the adults however and he was out of the house for an hour so maybe he needs more sports activities.

Nancy and I are phoning daily to talk about the riots in Athens, plane crashes, and European weather in the Mediterranean. This is the best part of the trip when we have so many plans to make. It is going to be a toss up for the largest suitcase for the best dressed traveler and you and I will not be in the running. Thanks for arranging all the details for us.

Frommers vs Fodors

You have all details down for our trip but where did the idea that passwords could be longer than 4 digits come from? I suppose I just got a short password by mistake. I still have no clue as to my itinerary, extra excursions or dollars needed.

This past weekend was spent at Cyd’s with her twins and her guitar-crafting husband. Really he has made 3 or 4 beautiful guitars since the twins were born. It was a busy time but we did squeeze in daily walks for wearing down the boys followed by the Escape to Africa video. The animation does look so much like Kenya.

The twins are getting so grown up but they haven’t really grown much. They are very wise however and know pretty much how to run the house and especially the parents. Mostly they enjoy riding their bikes in the driveway.

After nine years without entering a classroom I was enticed to enter Lucas’ elementary school just to see how the school works. I’m only volunteering with slow readers in an after school program and the 8 year olds can give me a run for my money. In a few weeks I hope I memorize the teacher’s edition so I can stay in charge as I had to give in to Hector, the ring leader for my page turning instructions today. I know you think zoo animals make volunteering so much easier and you must be right.

Our snow is still covering everything in sight in my yard. I’m looking for the inflatable snowman and now have the canvas base spotted. About three more weeks of this weather should completely uncover the blow up snow creature and then I might just go ahead and plug him in for a few days since I didn’t really get to see much of it this winter.

Well, you can see I have nothing to write about and no raunchy statements to make so I should leave some interesting blog addresses where the authors say whatever they please as if no one they know is reading their most private thoughts. I'm sure you wouldn’t be interested anyway. Keep the Frommer’s information coming.

Sunday

Today is a quiet Sunday with no food preparation in my kitchen as we are actually going out to eat for a change. It will be a quick bite as the two boys are not ones to linger over dinner no matter how entertaining the restaurant may be. Last night Claire and I crowded into the arena to watch our Gonzaga Bulldogs get beaten down by Memphis. It was a great time just watching the peppy student body jumping in unison while wearing basketball hoop netting for hats.

Lucas and I had a quiet, routine week which is what he likes I guess as at his family meeting he pronounced “Everyone should calm their nerves” as his goal for a tranquil family. The rule session was actually to set down some limits for computer time but his idea was valid also. We have a rigid schedule now and that helps move the morning along while still making certain he brushes his teeth, gets his homework and remembers his gloves.

Miles was at his best this week trying to top his feat of throwing his glasses out of a moving vehicle by throwing a walkie talkie at the LCD panel television screen. He told me later that he didn’t like the bad guy on the super heroes video. Really the devil must have made him do it because he is actually very thoughtful and sweet. Here you can see him presenting Alberta with Valentine flowers that he suggested we bring her. We were walking around Home Depot after the kid’s Valentine box building project when he spotted the flowers. Maybe this week their family will buy a replacement television with a protective shield.

My mom was pleased to see Miles and to see the flowers. She is not walking so well now and let me push her in a wheel chair to a recent doctor’s appointment. This means she is also not attending church as it was so difficult to get her in and out of the van. She seems content to be in the living room at her residence.

I spent a few hours talking to your sister and to Jill the past few days. I also talked to Diana a few times too as I cannot manage my iphone properly and it dials people without my knowledge. It reminds me of drunk dialing only this is dumb dialing. I need to work on this skill as several times I continue being connected to the last caller when I am unaware and they can hear all kinds of stories from me. I may soon be losing friends and relatives if this keeps up.

It is nice that Jeff’s divorce is finally complete after three years and especially nice that he got custody of Catherine since very few dads are given that privilege. Jill has her reservations to Madison and is reporting 16 attendants for the wedding couple. Diana has finished her last day of work and is now officially retired. She’ll need some ideas for volunteering but actually I know she will keep very busy. And wasn’t the note from Shizuo nice, except for that fact that he had very few personal references. I guess he knows he doesn’t want anyone to jump to any wild conclusions but of course, I want to anyway. So when do you think he’ll be having a wedding?

Popcorn Cake

A few weeks ago I resurrected this old recipe. Do you recognize your mom's handwriting?
The photo of the result is on Flickr.
