Arla's Aimless Anecdotes

This is my attempt to write one occasional email to various people at one time. I specifically write with my cousin Judy in mind. Since we grew up together we agreed in our teens that we'd always try to keep in contact. This is a supplement to our twice yearly phone calls and our once yearly visit at our Johanson Family Memorial Day Reunion.

Family Pundits

Yes, we have more than one politically wise teacher in our family. Darren, who formerly ran for President of the United States, has written a comment in response to Hank’s comment the week previously. I listened to Scott Simon speak last night at our local college and learned that he suspects some indictments after the election due to the 60 million dollar donations from Chicago alone to one particular campaign. I love to get comments.

Soccer finished up for Lucas on Saturday and my job was to man the video camera. Keep your eye on number 14.

Here is the team at their celebratory pizza luncheon.

It was a busy weekend with a Lucas sleepover at Grandma’s including the Wii Mario Slugger, carpentry assembly of scrap wood, disassembling an old tape recorder, attending the African Children’s Choir and yet when we pulled into Brett’s driveway Lucas complained that he didn’t get to do anything all weekend. I loved hearing Brett get a pay back for all the times when he yelled to me, “I’m bored, what is there to do?”

So far your attempt with organizing a group trip to Greece is working as Diana and Jim are now in. I still don’t have a roommate so I hope someone volunteers soon. It will give us something to focus upon as the snow blankets us.

This will be a good week-Halloween and the elections will be over!

Twittering

OK, so you don't like my idea of writing down little bits of my day and then comparing them to little bits of your day but then you don't have a cell phone so that may make a difference. I spent some time in the middle of the night trying to find a small photo to put on the site and also reading to find out what it was even about. I also fussed about posting your photo at the Cape of Good Hope and since I can't seem to post only one photo I'm just giving a link to your Kodak site. The photos are very nice.

Esther, Linda’s new granddaughter, has had many baby showers and Cyd and I attended one last week. I think they may have to rent a storage unit to contain all the items she has been gifted to date. Peyton and Walker continued to entertain me for several days in Sumner. We went to the Pumpkin Patch, played in their yard and I marveled at the fact that these little boys are finally consistently potty-trained. Happy Halloween from Peyton

So far no one wants to comment about Memorial Day. I talked to Diana yesterday and she did say that Katie and John have a new son, Jake Edgar. McKenna was giving Diana, the babysitter, a run for her money by refusing to take a nap. Cydney said she had to let her cry for one hour before giving up but Diana could only listen to her for 20 minutes before she caved. Believe me I know a lot about how important naptime is for grandmas.

I want to answer Hank’s question about why I’m a Republican. I’m afraid I’d have to ramble on for pages and pages until I discovered I could just shorten it by the saying I’m not one for sharing the wealth. I’m happy to share with those who are trying desperately to improve their lot in life but mostly I’m for little government and much independent endeavor. Actually I am sending in my ballot today and I will be happy when we can move on.

Today Miles and I are going to music class so I need to get going so I'll be the winner of this day. Miles likes to win too you know.

News from Chicago?

So far nothing about your trip though I see Hank came back from his political hiatus to take up the attempt to sway those of us hoping the red states win. Hank was right about my not reading article from the liberal leaning NY Times just as I’m positive he would not choose to be informed by Fox News. My political information seems to come mostly from youtube videos.

There was good news around here this week as my mom’s top dentures showed up in the dryer vent in her living group. It was clean anyway so she is wearing her uppers with no seeming after effect. Last Wednesday Miles spent an hour joining the ladies during their guitar sing along session. He is still asking me to sing, Show Me the Way to Go Home. My mom loved seeing him and commenting on the fact he has glasses.

Diana is anxious for replies, suggestions, ideas, comments of any kind so she can calm down about Memorial Day 2009. We are hoping perhaps one group will decide to change their mind and not secure their reservation with a deposit so we can still get an environmental learning center. Meanwhile Anna Marie is hoping we go for tents at Lewis and Clark so she can plan a weekend at an east coast conference or maybe join Mary Jane’s book reading group. The boys will love the tents and Diana says she and Jim are tarp experts so they will share their skills for keeping us dry.

Tomorrow is Hanna Schott's 67th Birthday. She's so much younger than the rest of us.

You Didn't Think You'd Get Away Without a Picture

We need an African Report

So I’ll write and see if you can send a few words in reply now that you must be home. You could send a photo too if you want. Most of the time I have no idea why I’m writing anything anyway. I’m sure all of these entries are starting to sound the same as my life doesn’t vary much.

We are getting ready to celebrate Lucas’ 6th birthday at Chuck E. Cheese’s. Probably Miles and I will leave early as he won’t be enjoying his brother and all his gifts. Some people provide gifts for the sibling so they won’t be slighted but Miles can learn to enjoy the gifting part of gifts rather than the getting.

Charlie, Taylor and Colton were waiting at the finish line on Saturday as my friends and I raced through the half marathon. They were waiting for Missy who was behind me but only because we had started the run at 7:15 a.m. before the official start at 9. And we had been walking for more than three hours while she was racing though the course at breakneck speed.

Diana and Jim are interested in the trip to Greece and I’ll assume you and Hank will want to participate. The Chico Chamber of Commerce trip is pricey but maybe not compared to Earthwatch. Diana might be retired by then so she could really celebrate. Who else wants to see Greece?

Luckily I have a high school nearby so kids sit on my back lawn often but last week was the topper when one couple spent the entire afternoon under my tree in a prone position. I probably could better describe positions but I won’t. My neighbor came in the front door telling me to turn on my sprinklers but it was getting close to the end of the school day anyway so I knew they’d be leaving. They were nicer than the young fellow who stuck his head out the car window and made a barfing sound as I rode by on my bike. Oh, I will miss them when these warm days disappear.

Too bad you missed Sarah last week. I hope you are able to catch up before the election.
