Arla's Aimless Anecdotes

This is my attempt to write one occasional email to various people at one time. I specifically write with my cousin Judy in mind. Since we grew up together we agreed in our teens that we'd always try to keep in contact. This is a supplement to our twice yearly phone calls and our once yearly visit at our Johanson Family Memorial Day Reunion.

We Survived and More

Of all the things I’ve lost I miss my hand phone the most. I know you thought I’d say my mind the most but really my mind is fine especially now when I’m not looking for ringgits or Brunei dollars. I just want you to know that I have a good mind no matter what you think. However if we ever have another trip together I will be taking my cell phone for sure. Oh, and my extremities work fine too for an old lady that is. I am very grateful neither of us had to be air rescued and flown hours to a hospital while we were on our trip. Losing unusual currency here and there doesn’t seem to matter in the least especially when we spent over two weeks obsessing over whether we had enough daily drinking water, purified from the muddy Kinabutangun River. Well, that and then clean clothes seemed to be at the bottom of the list of concerns. It just seemed easier to leave the clothes there.

And I was never truly frightened but maybe twice. Once when 20 pygmy elephants walked 5 feet from our boat and we weren’t moving away and once when someone spotted a pit viper and suddenly a small branch fell into the boat. I apologize for my loud, blood curdling scream. Hey, otherwise the trip was easy. Then again the cave full of bats and cockroaches left me eager to head for the entrance out even if there were a chance to get a swift’s nest for rejuvenating soup. I am anxious to see your photos as well as Mark’s. You will need a very large magnifying glass to look at my few photos.

It is now the middle of the night and for some reason I am wide awake. I hope you are able to make it to your first week of senior exercise. Were Hank and Fume’ happy to see you? I know the sun is shining on our newly planted rain forest trees. In ten years the Orangutans will be swinging through them and we’ll still be recalling our trip to Borneo only by then we’ll have more elaboration to the tale. Maybe you’ll forget to say, nothing dries in the rain forest. Meaning your laundry on your personal clothesline, of course--conveniently strung across our tiny room entrapping me in my tiny bed. Oh, yes, we had a good time.

Sounds like a wonderful trip. Great imagery of orangutans swinging through trees that were just planted.
