Arla's Aimless Anecdotes

This is my attempt to write one occasional email to various people at one time. I specifically write with my cousin Judy in mind. Since we grew up together we agreed in our teens that we'd always try to keep in contact. This is a supplement to our twice yearly phone calls and our once yearly visit at our Johanson Family Memorial Day Reunion.

We're in Deep

This was taken yesterday morning as Brett, Anna Marie and Miles were walking down my driveway. We have 25 inches stacked up today so says the weatherman, whom the television stations are forcing us to watch 24/7. At least we can say their predictions were correct this time.

I've been shoveling off and on just in case anyone would want to walk up my driveway, like perhaps a paper boy or a mailman but really I don't expect either today. My cars on in the garage on a little used street so I don't look for them to move for a few more days. I did walk 10 blocks to Safeway for a shingles shot yesterday. It's a good time to be concerned about shingles, huh? Anyway it seems I didn't have the correct Medicare D so I wasn't eligible anyway but it was a good outing both ways.

How's the Chicago weather? I think the entire state of Washington is in limbo watching the snow. There are a few more photos on my flickr site. My neighbor has three snowmobiles so we will be just riding around our houses for the holidays. It saves us from having to drive long distances like Leavenworth to snowmobile.

Wow! That is some snow. We have some here but not as bad. I guess north and south of here are harder hit. The "big one" is supposed to be coming in Sunday, snow followed by freezing rain - yikes! It better not put out the power. I have breastmilk saved up in the deep freezer. Becky is canceling the Olson/Burns/Yglesias etc Christmas party scheduled for Sunday. That sounds like a good plan.
You should start a facebook account while you are snowbound. It is very entertaining. We got Dad to join.

Hi Arla,
Judy send me your snow pic--truly amazing. As I sit in my apartment looking at the little dears of Lincoln Park sledding down our hill made of refuse, I marvel at how often we miss the ravages of winter.

Ninety miles north of us, for the second year, Milwaukee is getting dumped on, and all we get is a little inconvenience. That is not to say that I am not tired to scraping ice off my car.

But what caught my eye is the frequent use of my name in vain. One of these days I will post my daily journal on our trip to the Kalahari, and you will be sorry.

What also caught my eye is your statement about the "left leaning New York Times." This reminds me of the media critic who decried the fact that when some nut case says the earth is flat, media will say that it is alleged that the earth is round.

This, and the fact that you, I presume, and 146 million others thought that we would be better off with the same rightwingnuts in power in Washington.

I would love to have a dialog on examples of "leftism" by the New York Times. Of course this should exclude editorials and opinions. Remember that they have an Op Ed guy who said it was pop psychology that the Shia and the Sunni did not get along. And they also have a liar by the name of David Brooks on the right.
