Arla's Aimless Anecdotes

This is my attempt to write one occasional email to various people at one time. I specifically write with my cousin Judy in mind. Since we grew up together we agreed in our teens that we'd always try to keep in contact. This is a supplement to our twice yearly phone calls and our once yearly visit at our Johanson Family Memorial Day Reunion.

Lucas is 4!!!

You can tell he's happy to be older and he loves his Batman Party even though he's wearing a Spiderman shirt. Any super hero will do for him these days. And he shares his birthday with Katie and John's McKenna.

He had a small party at a children's science center downtown and after all the hoopla and planning the party was over in about 45 minutes leaving the kids to play with the exhibits.

My mom has been entertaining lately also. I've had dinner with her and her friend Wanda twice now and it is amusing. Each time I meet Wanda as if the first time and she is so pleased to meet me. We always have an interesting dinner conversation until I attempt to piece together the story line and find it just won't make sense. Wanda always makes certain to tell us why she can't chew food with her lower dentures and then shows us how they fall out of her mouth. I always cover my eyes and utter, "No", but that seems to make her more determined to demonstrate the loose dentures.

Mother's favorite conversation is so nice as she repeats this story at least two or three times during the course of the meal. "I am so thankful I have a daughter and I had to beg Palmer for her. I said, Let's have a child before you go into the service and finally he obliged me."

Someone at the table always wants more information about this topic and I'm cringing hoping she doesn't offer any more specific details. I never once say I was 3 when he enlisted.

Lucas and I are taking a Parent/Tot Spanish class once a week and I'm seeing a student teacher twice a week so I'm getting a routine going for myself. I'm also trying to spend more time with Miles since he is wedging himself into my presence with his sweet personality. Here he is with his required glasses since he kept losing his contacts.

What's going on in Chicago?
