Arla's Aimless Anecdotes

This is my attempt to write one occasional email to various people at one time. I specifically write with my cousin Judy in mind. Since we grew up together we agreed in our teens that we'd always try to keep in contact. This is a supplement to our twice yearly phone calls and our once yearly visit at our Johanson Family Memorial Day Reunion.

Who is Bonnie Hunt?

I asked my walking buddies this question the other day. One said, “The financial woman on television” and the other mentioned daytime television though neither had ever watched this Bonnie. I started watching her one day last week so I could get a handle on her show. She is pretty relaxed and seems to have little for a format. However the most important thing about her is that Judy actually knows her as a friend. You tell me you used to run into her at the park and she would make everyone laugh. I wonder what year that was?

Anyway if you hadn’t gone to an auction and she hadn’t donated tickets to her show and airfare to Los Angeles to see the show we still wouldn’t know who she was. See how much publicity she has received from you already? Maybe more people will want to watch it just to see Judy and perhaps her sister, niece and cousin. As the plans are firmed up you’ll be ready to announce when you are reacquainted with Bonnie.

We are ready for Thanksgiving. Cyd and her family will be driving over for a few days so you know it will be wild around here. I just hope there’s no biting or scratching and I do believe the boys are beyond that phase now. I’ll let you know what phase follows. We have plans to see Babes in Toyland so that might keep us entertained. We would normally see the arrival of Santa but of course that event has been moved up to the week before Thanksgiving.

Did you know that Shizuo is participating in a large robotic conference in Tokyo? We might read about him in the news. I am jealous about your trip next month. I need to look up the details but you didn’t send me the website. Sorry about the prisoners you are going to be housing just 60 miles from your home. You can always move to beautiful Washington.

November News

I use this term lightly as I have no news. I think this is why I like to write to you and tell you how little is going on here in Spokane these days. I spend many entire days just sitting and thinking I guess. I know I accomplish very little and somehow I feel like I should be vacuuming my car, washing windows, and cleaning cupboards.

We snagged an invitation to Colton’s birthday and we had to attend just to see Diana’s specialty birthday cake. She sent this photo so you can see it is a one-of-a-kind bakery delight. When I asked Colton if he liked the cake his Grandma made, he said, “My mom made this cake.” I’m just trying to make sure credit is given where credit is due.

Really I just enjoy seeing all the children together and I also like keeping in touch with our generation of family. It is nice we cousins seems to have much to share which is heartening since the older generation is getting more quiet, though not Ron who is doing well with his emailing. My mom is sleeping most of the time and no longer feeds herself but she is amazingly pleasant. Rambling around in my basement I found this tape recording of my dad talking and singing. When I played it for her she had this puzzled look on her face as she heard his voice. I thought it was a fun idea as he was doing a mock interview with Bill Getzinger. I know that name will ring a bell for you.

Peyton is as good as new these days so I will spare you the photos of his colonoscopy. He seems happy and more energetic Cyd reports. Now the tests will be given to Walker just to make certain he is clear. The parents are going to be proficient with prepping preschoolers for this procedure.

Claire and I took Lucas and Miles to see “Where the wild things are?” last week. It is an exercise event for the two of us. First they want pop, popcorn and candy then we head up a level for the theater. Miles drops his candy on the escalator, he reaches to pick it up, falls down on the moving stairway. Grandma then gets into quick action, leans over to pick him up, falls down and continues up the escalator feet first. Luckily I am able to stand myself up bringing Miles with me and my only injury was a few scrapes on my ankle. So yes, we now have a pact to ride the elevator when in the downtown mall for a movie. We also will never again order small drinks at the theater. We know now that the small is 24 oz. and costs $5.75. (We made many trips to the restroom during the movie)

Miles seems to be turning over a new leaf and now prides himself with doing the right thing. I got to tuck him in bed the other night and he always expects a short story. I started telling him about when Cyd and Brett took car trips in the back of our station wagon with no car seats or seat belts. He then decided to come clean about a prior transgression when he rode with his mom to the bakery without telling her that he was not wearing his seatbelt. I gasped with shock but he assured me it was a very short ride and nothing happened. I’m glad he was able to get that off his chest and I hope this is the last time he decides to flout any law.

I am mailing you a packet of names and addresses for MD 2011. I know you’ll enjoy looking at the prospective locations. Tell me more about the Galapagos trip. What do you have packed?

Peyton and Walker

Here they were on Halloween night as a Magician and G.I. Joe. Today Peyton had some minor surgery to stop some internal bleeding so things have not been as fun as Halloween. However the prospect for a brighter future is hopeful. Peyton is a little more quiet and easy going than magician, Walker.

Lucas and Miles had a good time on Halloween also though in the confusion before the Trick or Treating Miles neglected to put on his shoes but never mind he still got lots of candy as a shoeless Jack Sparrow. I think they walked about 4 blocks in 40 degree weather.

Did you get the new list of possible fancy Memorial Day venues? Diana came up with them. Who’d guess there would be a nice lodge near Othello? Diana also sent along a photo of her latest birthday cake for Colton. She is quite talented in the cake decorating department and she always makes the cake several weeks in advance and freezes it.

Isn’t it great to get email from Uncle Ron? He is not only writing long email but also heading out to help others with home repair projects. I will be thinking of something that needs fixing around here. Maybe he’d even like to see Bonnie Hunt since you have tickets.

Linda tried a Zumba class so I followed suit with one last night. There were 3 old ladies and 35 gals in their 20’s. If you google Zumba you can find a class in your area too. I’ve seen you do the African dances and though these are Latin themed they are very similar.

Brookes is a done deal for this MD. We need to discuss 2011 for a year or so.
